Why We Need to Talk About Shame and Mental Illness

What is your response to this video? What do you believe is the root and the answer to preventing suicide? What combination of solutions?I created this video in response to the recent announcements of Kate Spade and Athony Bordain's suicides. We need to start talking about shame. We need to start talking about mental illness. Suicide is on the rise in the U.S. and Kate Spade and Anthony Bordain are just two famous examples of that. The question we should be asking ourselves is why? As someone who has been in that place, I can tell you that it's SHAME. It's the thing no one wants to talk about, confront, or acknowledge. It's the root of much addiction, abuse, and mental illness. Shame, one way or the other, is the root of many suicides. People feel such intense despair, but if they reach out to someone, they can get help, a shoulder to cry on, someone to tell them it will get better, someone to tell them there's not something fundamentally wrong with them. That's what shame is. However, shame and fear of what others think prevents many people from reaching out and getting help. Shame is a self-maintaining black hole. Guilt is "I did something wrong." That's healthy. Shame is, "I am wrong for being here. I'm worthless. I'm deficient." Podcast Website
